Win a copy of Lisa Cron's astonishing Wired for Story: Using Brain Science to Hook Readers From the Very First Sentence

Struggling to write your novel? Feel like you can't get a grip of on your story. My friend, the brilliant story-structure guru, UCLA instructor, former agent and writer Lisa Cron's new book, Wired For Story: The Writers' Guide to Using Brain Science to Hook Readers From the Very First Sentence is a new way of looking at story, based on the science of how the brain works. Trust me, it works. I've made Lisa sit down with me and help me unlock two novels so far, and a script. You'll want to snap up this book, but she's offering to give away 4 copies. And all you have to do is comment here on what you think the biggest problem in telling a story well is. The first four responses get a book!

Don't forget, if you see you are one of the first four, get me your address at carleavitt@hotmail.com so we can send you a book!

I think the biggest problem in telling a story well is getting out of your own way. You have to shove away the I can'ts and personal issues and time questions and open a conduit.

For me, the biggest problem in telling a story is making sure the characters are developed enough for the reader to give a darn about the story. Lisa's book sounds fascinating. I've read and written a lot through the years about the science of the mind as a freelance health writer. This books sounds like it's right up my alley!

Anything that helps me tell the story well, I will take. Thanks!

And the biggest problem for me is letting my characters find their own voices.

The biggest problem for me is structure: when to place that flashback, what should happen next to keep that reader reading. I'm able to get into my character's heads well enough but I have trouble with plotting.

Seven comments ahead of me, rats, so I have now ordered this book.

The biggest challenge when telling a story is driving it forward with every word. Every word needs to serve the story, whether by illuminating the characters or by informing the reader about the situation in a vivid and inevitable yet frequently surprising way.

Katharine, Lisa is one of my closest friends. And she's also genius. The book is so smart about how to craft story--and why.
