Writers' communities

OK, I know this is embarrassing, but I am on myspace and facebook and I still don't quite know what I'm doing there or how to proceed. I feel like I'm the odd girl out there somehow and whenever I get emails to be someone's friend or contact, I'm always happy and surprised! If anyone knows the intricacies of either of those places and how I should or could be on there, please let me know.

So where else do I hang out?

I like Backspace (see a few entries down), which I've just discovered, a lot. I also like Hybrid Fiction at first glance. I'm a rabid fan of Linked In, too. And I love redroom. Mostly, though, I'm at my computer writing and if I break it's to get to my real online community--I email other writers to talk about our latest projects, offer and receive encouragement and support and bad jokes.

  1. Ha, I just use Facebook to play Scrabble (Scrabulous) with other writers. :-) It's my intermittant time suck equivalent of going to the water cooler. I use email for "serious" writer discussions/sharing etc.

  2. I'm on Myspace, just cause it's easy and I know a lot of musicians about it. And Crimespace, because, well, I write crime fiction. If I had more time, I'd spend more time at Backspace and Readerville, but these days I feel like I'm barely keeping up... reading my few requisite blogs and trying to get some work done!

  3. I use Facebook...very sparingly. I use e-mail for all my correspondance and if I correspond on Facebook it is in a direct "message to" the person...not on their "wall" which is public.

I also have all my privacy settings at high. You might want to do this. It prevents people from seeing your profile and from seeing who your friends are. Only my friends can see my profile. And that also means that they must send me a friend request...if I accept...then they can check out my profile and see all my stuff.

I find this especially good for people you'd rather not reconnect with :-) I've had a couple of "oh no's" crawl out of the woodwork. But, I've had lovely surprises from my elementary school days too!

And I also don't belong to any "networks" on face book as that opens me up to everyone else on that network. But it all depends on how private you want it to be.

And scrabulous is a lot of fun!

  4. I'm lost in both sites too. Too "cluttered" for me.

Found your blog via Amazon Kindle page...looking for fresh material to download. :-)

  5. Thanks so much for the tips, which help me be a bit less confused. But how do you use it to connect with readers?

Patty, welcome to my blog! Let me know if and when you read my novels and if you like them!
